On this page:
In addition to saving what you find on JSTOR, you can supplement content in your Workspace by uploading your own images through the Uploaded items tab. The ability to upload images to your Workspace is available for users with access to JSTOR through participating institutions of higher education or users with an active JPASS subscription.
Your uploaded content can be used with all of the tools available in Workspace including:
- Exporting items to PowerPoint, PDF, or ZIP
- Presenting and comparing items in full screen
- Sharing items with other members of your institution
Uploading items to Workspace
To upload items to your Workspace:
- Log into your Workspace.
- If you’re an Artstor user and haven’t logged into JSTOR before, you can use your Artstor username and password.
- See how to register for a free personal account on JSTOR.
- Select the Uploaded items tab.
- Select the Upload button.
- Drag and drop or select up to ten (10) image files from your computer to upload.
- JPEG and PNG image files no larger than ten megabytes (10MB) each are supported.
- Add metadata such as title, date, or description for each item.
- While only the Title field is required, adding metadata can help when searching and sorting your items later.
- Please note: at this time it is not possible to edit items after uploading.
- When you’re finished, select the Upload all button.
Once your items have finished uploading, it may take a few moments for them to become visible in your Uploaded items space. Clicking an item thumbnail will take you to the item’s detail page, where you can use the IIIF image viewer to zoom in or out, compare the image alongside other content, or view it in full screen.
The detail page also includes your item metadata, a stable link to the item (only accessible if the item is added to a folder and shared), and identification of who it was uploaded by.
Organizing and sharing your uploaded items
Items in your Uploaded items tab are visible only to you, including in JSTOR search results, until you choose to add them to a folder in your Workspace and share the folder link with other members of your institution.
If you choose to delete an uploaded item that you've shared, it will also be removed from any Workspace folders where it was saved or copied. (This does not include downloaded or exported images such as in PowerPoint presentations or reference lists.)
To add one or more uploaded items to a folder in your Workspace:
- Log into your Workspace.
- If you’re an Artstor user and haven’t logged into JSTOR before, you can use your Artstor username and password.
- See how to register for a free personal account on JSTOR.
- Select the Uploaded items tab.
- To add a single item to a folder, select the Add to folder button next to an item's thumbnail and choose a folder to copy the item into.
- Your original uploaded item will remain in the Uploaded items tab.
- As with saving items you find on JSTOR, you can add multiple copies of the same uploaded item to your Workspace folders by selecting the Add to folder button again.
- To add multiple items to a folder in bulk, select the checkboxes next to one or more items and click the Add to folder button at the top of your Workspace.
- Optionally, share your Workspace folder with other members of your institution.
Deleting uploaded items
Deleting an item you've uploaded will remove it from all locations in your Workspace. If the item was shared with members of your institution, it will also be removed from any Workspace folders where it was saved or copied. (This does not include downloaded or exported images such as in PowerPoint presentations or reference lists.)
To delete one or more items you've uploaded to your Workspace:
- Log into your Workspace.
- If you’re an Artstor user and haven’t logged into JSTOR before, you can use your Artstor username and password.
- See how to register for a free personal account on JSTOR.
- Select the Uploaded items tab.
- To delete a single item, open the overflow menu for the item you wish to delete by clicking the three vertical dots after the item's name and select Delete.
- To delete multiple items in bulk, select the checkboxes next to one or more items and click the Delete button at the top of your Workspace.
Upcoming limits to Workspace uploads
Starting on January 20, 2025, the ability to upload items to Workspace and the Uploaded Items tab will be limited to:
- Users with active access through participating institutions of higher education (not including high schools or public libraries) - To check the status of your institutional access, visit Linked Institutions while logged in through your JSTOR account.
- Users with active JPASS subscriptions - To check the status of your JPASS subscription, visit JPASS Downloads while logged in through your JSTOR account.
After this date, if you’re not affiliated with one of these groups (or your pairing or subscription has expired):
- You will no longer have access to the Uploaded Items tab in Workspace.
- Any uploaded images you’ve previously saved to a Workspace folder, including shared folders, will continue to be available to you and members of your institution (if shared).
- You won’t be able to upload new images, save your existing uploaded images to folders, or delete your existing uploaded images.
If you have images in your Uploaded Items tab and this change will affect you, we recommend saving your uploaded images that you wish to keep to a folder in your Workspace or deleting your uploaded images before January 20, 2025.
Please note, this change will only affect images in your Uploaded Items tab. Content you’ve saved from JSTOR—including articles, book chapters, and primary sources such as images—won’t be impacted by this change.
