Note: The ability to enable or disable JSTOR's AI research tool for an institution is available to non-consortium admins only if access to the research tool has been activated for that institution. If you don’t see this setting in JSTOR Admin, the research tool either has not been activated for your institution or you're logged in as a consortium admin and should contact the institution's local admin.

About JSTOR’s AI research tool

JSTOR’s AI research tool employs AI and other technologies to enhance research and discovery of JSTOR’s content. It can highlight key points and arguments in a text, recommend related JSTOR content (it does not access resources outside of JSTOR), suggest thematically similar research, and answer questions about the item. Managing access to the research tool

JSTOR recognizes that institutions have different needs when it comes to AI-driven research tools. Administrators can enable or disable access for all users at your institution through JSTOR Admin.

To enable or disable the research tool for your institution:

  1. Log into JSTOR Admin with a personal account that has administrative permissions.
  2. Select Account Information in the sidebar.
  3. Under JSTOR’s Interactive Research Tool, check or uncheck the checkbox.
    • There is no delay after changing this setting; however, if you are already logged into JSTOR, you may need to log out and log in again to see the change reflected in your own browser.
    • If you don’t see this setting in JSTOR Admin, the research tool either has not been activated for your institution or you're logged in as a consortium admin and should contact the institution's local admin.

When enabled, users logged into JSTOR through your institution and their personal JSTOR account will see the option to use the research tool on select journal articles, book chapters, and research reports. Users can also hide the tool for themselves at any time using an On/Off toggle for the tool itself.

If the tool is disabled for your institution, users will not see the option to use the research tool. Please note that if a user has access to JSTOR through multiple institutions, they may still retain access to the tool through another institution.
